Chiwen is a Chinese traditional architectural ornament on roof ridge locating on the main ridge ends. Earlier it was known as the “Chiwei” and was called “Chiwen” in the beginning of the Tang Dynasty and till the Ming Dynasty it kept the same pronounciation of “Chiwen” but writen in different Chinese characters. Its styling evolved from “tail” to “kiss” modelling. Chiwen is the ritual symbol of feudal imperial supremacy and fireproof and lightningproof totem. The profound influence of etiquette and official standard culture on Chinese traditional architectural roof modelling is reflected in it.
