Abstract:By using such methods as kernel density analysis method, geographic concentration index, and nearest neighbor index, a research has been conducted on the spatial distribution features of historical and cultural landscape areas in Hubei Province with a case study of 86 famous historical and cultural towns, villages and districts in Hubei Province. The results show that the number of historical and cultural landscape areas in Hubei Province is characterzied with an uneven distribution in various regions, showing an overall layout of “higher density in the south and lower density in the north”, among which Huangshi City ranks first in number. Different types of historical and cultural landscape areas shows a trend of “aggregation of the majority, dispersion of the minority”; there is a significant spatial agglomeration feature, with clustered regions in the southeastern, central, and southwestern areas of Hubei Province, and banded aggregation in the northern and southern corridors of Hubei Province, showing an overall spatial agglomeration feature of “three clusters plus two corridors”. Moreover, the distribution of historical and cultural landscape areas are strongly correlated with elevation, slope, rivers, historical paths, and spatiotemporal changes.
