Abstract:David Herman, a contemporary western cognitive narratologist, has long been committed to interdisciplinary research in narratology. In the later stage of his academic career, he turned his attention to animals in narrative texts, focusing on the human-animal relationships in storyworlds. His aim is to reflect on real-life issues such as ecology, environment, species, homeland and community from the perspective of narratological studies.?In order to illustrate how narratology can inspire people to reconsider the nature and scope of human-animal relationships, Herman, with the concept of “self-narratives”, specifically analyzes how the protagonist in the short story Above and Below constructs “self-narratives” and enables biocentric becoming by interacting with animals and engaging in their worlds. Thus, Herman proposes the concept of “narratology beyond the human”. It not only conforms to the current trend of constructing new theories in narratology, but also indicates that narratology is based on social reality and is a discipline that is close to and reflects life.
