Abstract:Defining Confucianism as religious dynamics is an academic innovation, offering a new perspective for understanding traditional Confucianism. The validity of regarding Confucianism as religious dynamics lies in three core underpinnings: the transcendent ultimate entity “Heaven” as its premise, the evolution of Confucian thought from Confucius to Mencius as its carrier, and the inward cultivation of heart-and-mind as its method. As a form of religious dynamics, Confucianism is both a philosophical theory and a religious form. In a sense, it accomplishes a dual reconstruction and transcendence of the views that “Confucianism is ethics” and “Confucianism is religion”, thereby extending the discourse on “Confucianism as religion”.
