Abstract:In Cao Yu’s drama Sunrise, musical elements function as a hidden narrative perspective that carries significant storytelling weight. Through the ingenious arrangement of different types of music, the author effectively extends and enriches the realist thematic implications of the work. The voice of beggars presents the misery and misfortune of the lower-class; the melody in aristocracy’s decadent parties embodies the irony and sarcasm to the upper class; and the work chants of laborers express their positive idealism of life.
