Abstract:After the May 4th movement, Hunan modern dramatists continued to follow the spirit of the May 4th movement, and attempted to extract themes echoing the spirit of enlightenment from novels, folktales and mythologies concerning the events of the past. Visiting Wen from Cao Xueqin’ s Dream of the Red Mansions, the White Snake and Xu Xian from The Legend of White Snake, Pan Jinlian from Shi Nai’ an’ s Water Magins, and The Peacock Flies Southeast from the folk song of the same name in Han Dynasty, these well-known stories from the past are all re-examined, interpreted and written with modern vision, modern concept, modern mentality and modern way, which reflects the innovative and pioneering thinking, courage to challenge tradition, social responsibility and humanitarian spirit of Hunan dramatists as modern literati.
