The themes of traditional repertoire of Hunan Huadeng Opera are mainly based on the life familiar to the lower strata of the society, and the main theme is diversified and the“folk nature”is prominent: either they narrate the ethical relationship between mother-law and daughter-in-law, wife and concubines, and the relationship between step-mother and the daughter of the former wife among the families of the lower strata of the society; or they act out the relationship between men and women in the lower strata of the society; or they criticize a certain social phenomenon by means of joke plays with a little bit of absurdity. Or, through some comedic plots with a little absurdity, to criticize a certain social phenomenon; or only a story framework “loaded” with a variety of folk songs, dances, music, jokes, etc. for fun. As the degree of dramatization of the opera increased, its subject matter also gradually expanded, and there appeared the repertoire of mythological stories, public case stories, and so on.
