Ning Diaoyuan attached great importance to the creation of poem prefaces, which could be divided into various types such as parting preface, feasting preface, singing and versifying preface etc.，with different properties and functions. His poem prefaces either indicated the time, or pointed to the place, or recorded events, or introduced people, and they have high historical value. His poem prefaces have broad artistic conception, magnificent momentum, beautiful language, neat antithesis and distinct artistic characteristics,which could be regarded as the treasure of modern Chinese poem preface.
