During the May Fourth Movement, Hunan pioneering intellectuals actively ran patriotic and revolutionary newspapers and periodicals to publicize Marxism. These newspapers and periodicals were the major mass media in the early dissemination process of Marxism, among which Xiangjiang Review, New Hunan, and Hunan Popular Newspapers played an important role. These newspapers and periodicals, united with Marxist organizations and revolutionary bookstores as the publicity fronts, introduced Marxism in a systematic and critical way, and inspired people a lot at that time, leading to a satisfactory effect of early Marxism dissemination and a solid foundation for the up-coming revolution and the establishment of early CPC and Communist Youth League organizations.
