Abstract:The 1980s were not only a turning point for Chang Yao, but also a period of maturity for his poetry. While lamenting the sorrow of his fate, the political sentiments lurking beneath his words intensified and evolved into a characteristic of his poetry during this period. The poem’s mourning and recollection of painful experiences and its extension from expressions of individual spiritual anguish to pity for the miserable destiny of mankind show the poet’s awareness of life and humanistic concern for the world from his own perspective. The rewriting and reworking of the poet’s old works, such as the first publication and the rewriting of old works, provide a glimpse of how the poet dealt with the relationship between his spiritual needs and the realization of his political ideals.
