Abstract:In a sense, Chinese and Western narrative thought is the reflection of Chinese and Western culture in the narrative field. To understand Chinese and Western narrative thoughts, we must first understand Chinese and Western cultures. The origin of Chinese and Western cultures is different, so is the view of individual and collective. From the point of view of characteristics, Chinese culture is ethic-oriented, comprehensive and perceptive; Western culture is scientific, analytical and intellectual. Grasping these differences between Chinese culture and western culture is helpful to enhance our understanding of Chinese and western narrative thoughts. Chinese novels like the narration of good and evil and less metaphysical thinking, while western novels pay attention to exploring the problems of society and human nature; Western Tragedies focus on seriousness and sublimity, while Chinese tragedies pay attention to ethics and sadness; Western Tragedies attach importance to the purity of genre, while Chinese tragedies have weak stylistic awareness; and so on. These differences between Chinese and Western narrative concepts need to start with culture in order to have a more thorough grasp.
