Abstract:Paratexts, around the text, are indispensable factors in translation activities, which supplement and even strengthen the text, as well as coordinate the relationship between the reader and the text. Based on the Paratext Theory put forward by Gerard Genette,the paper focuses on the representative paratexts in Anne Birrell’s translation of Shan Hai Jing and tries to explorethe representative paratexts and their functions. The study suggests that the paratexts in Anne Birrell’s translation of Shan Hai Jing play an important role in constructing the cultural image, highlighting the translator’s style and promoting the acceptance of the translation, and its success provides some references for the translation of Chinese classics.
