    摘要:

    中国古人有名有姓有字甚至有的还有号,并且名、字和号意义相互联系。《红楼梦》中有字的人物共14个,其字和名具有丰富的文化含义,且联系密切;人物的号,在《红楼梦》中包括人物的雅号、绰号和封号,这些号自成群体,文化意义非常深远。对于《红楼梦》中的人物字号群,杨、霍英译有较大差异,但二者译文中人物字号群的文化含义均未得到应有的体现,这给姓名文化的传递造成了一定损失,也给西方读者理解故事情节造成了一定困扰。中国文学著作中的人物尤其古代历史文化名人字和号的翻译需依据文化翻译理论,尽量使其文化含义得以有效传递。

    Abstract:

    The ancient Chinese had family names, childhood names, school names even pen names.What’s more, the meanings of the childhood names, school names even pen names are connected with each other. In Hong Lou Meng, there are 14 characters who had school names. The school names and childhood names have rich cultural meanings and are closely related. Characters’pen names in Hong Lou Meng include nicknames, elegant names and titles or courtesy names whose culture connotations are also very far-reaching. There is a big difference between the Yangs’and David Hawkes’English translation of the names in Hong Lou Meng. Both translation could not express the culture connotation of the group of the titles as a whole at all, which more or less caused a certain loss in the transmission of name culture and also caused some confusion to western readers' understanding of the plot. The translation of school names and pen names of the characters in Chinese literary works, especially ancient historical and cultural celebrities, needs to be based on cultural translation theory, so that the cultural meaning can be effectively transmitted as much as possible.
