Shen Congwen experienced ups and downs in his life, which represents the encounters and trends of some intellectuals in the political vicissitudes of China in the 20th century. From 1966 to 1976, Shen Congwen’s family drifted from place to place, so he frequently wrote home letters to his family. Reading Shen Congwen’s home letters from the perspectives of “affection” and “achievement”, and excavating the discourse implication hidden under the text-reinterpretation of local complex, deep expression of family and country worries, multiple interpretations of life significance, can deeply explore the complex relationship between social changes and literati’s mentality.
