Abstract:Hawthorne is the most influential romantic novelist in the 19th century in the United States. He is also a writer with complex and profound thoughts. Reading his novels from the perspective of literary ethics criticism, we can see that he has consistently carried out his criticism of the dark side of human nature and his examination and consideration of ethical dilemmas throughout his creation. His works show the importance of the influence of moral self-discipline on one’s own, the fate of others and society through revealing the evil of people’s hearts from different angles and writing about the process of moral evolution. He hopes to find an effective way to redeem evil and to solve the moral dilemma faced by people from the inner strength of people. His novels are full of realistic critical spirit and aesthetic characteristics of seeking social harmony, thus showing charming thoughts and artistic charm.
