In the external transmission of Chinese costume dramas, there is some inaccuracy in translating the titles of the Chinese costume dramas into English, such as semantic errors, grammatical errors, lack of aesthetic sense, lengthy titles, different English titles of the same play, and residual Pinyin, etc. These different examples of inaccuracy are usually caused by cultural background differences, linguistic background differences, different ways of thinking, and translators’ lack of professional qualities. In translating the titles of Chinese costume dramas, different translation strategies should be adopted according to different types of titles. Specifically, transliteration should be used for the type of titles being named after famous people and places, literal translation and transliteration for the type being named after the heroes of biographies, dynasties and empires, free translation for the titles containing Chinese allusions, poems and idioms, and the addition translation for the titles being named after unknown people or simple and plain titles, the subtraction translation for the titles with too long or unnecessary modifying words, and the creative translation for the titles which are obscure or the ones that do not match the plot. And domestication should be adopted to translate the titles of costume dramas adapted from the Chinese classics or the sequels of the costume plays.
