Abstract:According to Foucaul’s Power Discourse Theory, located in the network of power discourse, traditional Irish women in James Joyce’s works are, on the one hand, submissive to men. On the other hand, they are powerful. They use discourse as a way of expressing their will, turning more Irish women into obedient traditional women. Under the control of political discourse back then in Ireland, Irish traditional women are devoid of ego and unable to get rid of the surveillance of society, family and marriage. Under the control of religious and male power discourse, having lost discourse right, individual freedom and personal space, the traditional Irish women were no longer individuals true to themselves.
