Abstract:With the end of the first Opium War, China gradually became a semicolony of the Western powers. Guangzhou and other trading port cities began the process of modernization and transformation. Modern Lingnan newspapers and periodicals covered Guangzhou city and social life in various aspects in the middle of the 19th century. Urban development and abnormal consumption were concentrated in the reports. Social contradictions and urban management problems were highlighted in the process of urbanization. As well as the increasingly serious problems of communication and cultural integration between China and the West, has also been paid attention to by the Chinese and English newspapers, and thus shaped the city image of Guangzhou in the middle of the 19th century.
