Abstract:The fourfold classification of the schools in the English translation of Chinese poetry is based on Wen, Zhi, Ya and Su from classical Chinese literary theories and traditional Chinese translation theories. Wen and Zhi focus on how much rewriting exists in the translation while giving consideration to faithfulness and smoothness. Ya and Su focus on whether the translation focuses on textoriented literariness or readeroriented popularity. Thus, this classification divides the schools of the English translation of Chinese poetry into four kinds: Wenya, Wensu, Zhiya and Zhisu. This new classification makes up for the deficiency of the previous classifications, providing new research perspectives and methods in the systematic study of the theories and schools in the English translation of Chinese poetry.
