Abstract:The early translators of the Yijing were both missionaries, such as Matteo Ricci, Nicolas Trigault and Joachim Bouvet, and the nonmissionaries such as Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Leibniz holds that the sixtyfour hexagrams of the Yijing were similar to the arithmetic binary, although the two were not all the same. The point is that his strategy in doing so came down from the same tradition as the missionaries. Fairly speaking, the early spread of the Yijing in the West has objectively influenced and changed the Western view of the East, and thereafter Confucianism, with the Yijing as the representative, has begun to take root in Europe.
