Abstract:Jia Pingwa's recent work The Pole Flower exposes outstanding problems such as human trafficking, rural regime weakening at grass-roots level and urban alienation in China at the present time by depicting the tragic fate of the heroine Hudie. It also confronts the vulgarity of rural literature stripped of nostalgia, revealing the importance of comfucian and taoist culture in maintaining rural Chinese constant, which is inevitably coming to an end. Apart from deeply sticking to realist literary tradition, the awareness of political participation in the work highlights the author's change of narrative standpoint. Jia Pingwa's reflection faces the triumphantly advancing rural China in modern times, showing the upright quality and sincere creation of the author.
