Distinct characteristics have been found in the historical-related works by Yan Jianhuai. This is especially true for his master work Facial Makeups of the Empire: Officialdom Faces of the Northern Song Dynasty, where relatively impartial standpoint, humorous and straightforward writing skills and storytelling techniques have been applied to characterize the officials of the Northern Song Dynasty.
