Shen Congwen’s novel Changhe describes the changes of west Hunan areas in 1930s and 1940s brought by “modern ideology”. Lots of folk humorous language and ironic narration are used and many weird folk images are moulded in the book, which gives the whole novel a distinct folk carnival style and subverts the official ideology. Through the folk humorous narration, the author expresses his yearn for the equal and democratic interpersonal relationship, his praise for the free and honest humanity and his struggle agaist the course of modernization , which pursuing the order, norms, authority and material.
