Abstract:The setting of the characters in some plays of Gao Xingjian is relatively simple, even only two people can be found in some plays. Except the simple relations of characters, there is another role that doesn’t join the dialogue. For example, "the silent people" in The Station, "the retired old man "in The Shelter from the Rain, "the monk" in The Dialogue and Backchat. They only have gestures and expressions. They are not involved in the plot, but still can be considered as an indispensable part of the play, just like other characters. These characters express themselves by silent actions and emotions, which become more dramatic and amusing. They make some polyphonic effects and open up multilevel spaces.
