Abstract:Chinese traditional novels refer to the real trivial events, while the modern novels are complete fictional stories. In A Brief History of Chinese Novels, Lu Xun’s eclectic approach of combining the real notes and legendary stories commits the mistake of heterogeneous style. The reason why Lu Xun did so is closely related to his stubborn personality, even more related to his preference for China’s traditional notes. Due to Lu Xun’s great influence, many subsequent researchers dared not go one step beyond and copied his framework of Chinese novels, which leads to a confusion of the concept of novel and leaves us a pity.
