Abstract:Folk customs and rituals are important devices Chinese ethnic writers employ in creating literary images, as they can not only be used to embody the collective characteristics of the characters, but also highlight the personality of the individuals through their attitudes towards the folk customs. In addition, most folk customs and rituals are shared by the whole ethnic group and can be inherited; therefore the characters the writers created may well be recurrent literary archetypes.
