Abstract:With the idea of contexts’ restraints on translating widely accepted, scholars from different countries have made numerous achievements in context. Jef Verschueren, who proposed the Theory of Adaptation from the perspective of pragmatics, holds that the words one chooses while using a language should adapt to the contextual correlates and the language structures. Translating, a kind of choice of words, should do the same and be supervised with contextual adaptation. To further explore the relationship between translation and context, the paper, combining the Theory of Adaptation with the theory of context, attempts to probe into how word-choosing adapts to concrete contexts in translating, and demonstrate why “Kedoukenla”, a translation of Coca-Cola, is deserted.
