Abstract:Hyperbole is a language form often applied in verbal humor and having a strong power of humor generation. Within the framework of the General Theory of Verbal Humor,it intends to explore how humor generated by hyperbole is transferred to the target text and identify the optimum translation method of humorous texts. The research is a systematic analysis of “Er Ma” and its English version “Mr. Ma and son” with its Chinese-English bilingual parallel database as the research approach. It hopes to enrich our knowledge in humor translation and rhetoric. The results of the research show that literal translation is the most frequently used translation method, while free translation and substitution rank the second and third with omission the least resorted approach. Furthermore, omission may well result in the disappearance of humor.
