Abstract:Seen from the perspective of Bakhtin’s theory of “polyphony”, Mo Yan's novel Frog (2009) is characterized by the so-called “polyphonic dialogue” in its narrative structure. The choosing of this kind of narrative mode is in accord with the author's ambiguous attitude towards "modernity". And just because of this narrative mode, value judgment is suspended in the novel; as a result, Mo Yan fails to give an affirmative answer to the ripping encounter between life and history.
