Abstract:Xu Yun, a representative figure of Zen in modern China, has a legendary life. He abided by “quitting as a teacher and strictly upholding precepts” in his entire lifetime. He pointed out that precept is the supreme Bodhi, and made various Buddhist rules and prohibitions, which made historical contributions to the development of Buddhism. He developed farming and Zen simultaneously and emphasized that hard work is the only way to realize a clean and peaceful life. Hence he made strict living regulations. Master Xu Yun viewed work as the true realization of life, which showed sophisticated spirit and brave, advancing attitude to life. The struggling spirit and advancing attitude can bright the inner soul of Buddhists and help them to experience wisdom and happiness.
