With the deal of wheat in Chicago as its major theme, The Pit from one side reflects the behind-the-scenes commodity trading of American monopoly capitalism. The novel not only describes the heroine's psychological change and her funk towards city after her settlement in the city and mirrors objectively the operation of the wheat transaction at the primary stage of American monopoly capitalism, but also gives an account of the hero's psychological metamorphosis formed after achieving great success and absolute failure in speculation in the pit in a very short time. Norris creatively constructs the images of “The Black Hole” and “The Sphinx” by which reveals the origin of tangled state of human nature and animal instinct and highlight the domination of economy in the early modern city.
