Most of the female images in Su Tong's novels are deeply exploited by patriarchal culture system and thus they have a strong mental tendency of social masochism. However, in order to find spiritual balance, they also have a strong psychological impulse of sadism during the process of masochism. In the cycle of sadism and masochism, they repeat the human tragedy of females as the second sex.
