Abstract:There are three potential mentalities behind Wang Meng's later novel writings. They are the mentality of a wise man, the mentality of an elder man and that of a historian. The mentality of a wise man lowers his spiritual level as an intellectual; the mentality of an elder man makes him understand thoroughly the sadness from the lack of mutual understanding between generations; while the mentality of a historian embarrasses his writings. These three mentalities constitute a set of mature attitude structures in his later life, which manipulate and restrict the discourse and narration of his novels.
