Abstract:The art works of China paper-cut art master L Shengzhong and western paper-cut artist Matisse have many similarities while possess their own unique artistic styles. L Shengzhong’s paper-cut art is rooted in the ancient and profound oriental folk art and demonstrates the typical national characteristics. The iconic image is “little red man”with symbolic significance of “Spiritism”. Restructuring and deformation of repeated “little red man” symbol has become the main modeling language in L Shengzhong’s paper-cut art. In the color employment, Mr. L Shengzhong’s paper-cut works are of red paper with white grounding, without too many changes. Matisse’s paper-cut art is also influenced by his national culture with the combination of the deep, skilled painting techniques. The subjects and contents are mostly about rich and colorful daily life. Matisse’s art creation also uses the skill of repeat, but he stresses more of the abstract visual symbol, ornamentality and patterning. As of color, Matisse likes to use large color mosaic to create the contrasting color images.
