Abstract:The design of matchbox pictures of the late Qing dynasty reflected culture essence of China traditional auspicious culture with auspicious patterns, characters and colors. These three kinds of auspicious culture forms conveyed people’s aesthetic and cultural needs. In the respect of auspiciousness, the words of “blessing”, “longevity”, “wealth”, “make big profits with small capital” and the use of numbers as one, three, five and nine are considered auspicious. As for the auspicious patterns, the “form” inheritance of traditional lucky design and the extension of “meaning” to convey meaning were mainly applied. Regarding the lucky colour, red standing for jubilance, yellow indicating rich and honour, and green representing vitality were mainly adopted, which expressed the rich emotions and the will of blessing and praying of Chinese nation. These designs have the effects of displaying the strengths. Further analysis and experience of the design of matchbox pictures with auspicious culture forms contribute to designing the nationalized and individualized works.
