Edna, the heroine of The Awakening, was not satisfied with the status of her life as a married woman with two children, therefore tried to explore a new and independent life through the liberation of her sexual desire and romantic love, but she ended by killing herself. From the perspective of Lacan’s theory of the three orders, Edna has gone through the psychological journey for three aspects: trying to break away from the socialized roles set by the Other in the symbolic, seeking solace in the imaginary order of sensual pleasures and romance, and finally, facing up to the void at the core of the subject and walking into the sea to attain a union with the Mother.
