Abstract:In the 1980s, country love themes were occurred in intellectual youth novels and they continued to appear from time to time in the 1990’s. However, a closer look at the subjects may cast light on some differences. In contrast to the 1980’s duty to seek for a spiritual home in the countryside, novels of the 1990’s were more utilitarian than melodious, which were not only related to Chinese reform of economic system and cultural transformation but also connected to the author’s psychological changes. Meanwhile, those farmers or peasants who had all lost their voices in the 1980’s novels were represented by their descendants who answered the unrequited country love with hate.
