This essay analyzes Sinclair Lewis’s novel Babbitt. The main character Babbitt demonstrates the feature of “ideal pragmatism ”based on the principle of pragmatism and supplemented idealism which reflects America’s national cultural characteristic of “integrating idealism and pragmatism”. The feature is a vivid portrayal of the American character during the transitional period of American society from industrial economy to consumer economy.
