Individuals in exile regard pursuing self-identity as an instinct. However, the process of identification is complicated. There appear in Milan Kundera's novels three identity modes: one-way individual-oriented identity mode, value-oriented dual identity mode and de-centered identity mode, which symbolically reflect Milan Kundera's state of perception of the modern society as well as his personal status.
